Life on the Back of a Motorbike
This is how I spend a portion of most days - on the back of a motorbike. I have a bright yellow helmet, but lai xe om have helmets too. Yesterday’s was bright purple with a panda on it. It was awful quality, but my favourite one thus far.
Before Vietnam, I had only been on the back of one bike. It was a bike I took from the bottom to the top of Rocinha, going straight up a hill trying to...

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Allie and I have spent part of our week at UN Gender Program Coordination Group (PCG) meetings and activities hosted by UN Women. The commitment to end domestic violence in Vietnam is prevalent by government ministries, NGOs, and IGOs, but there’s still a long way to go.

This weekend I felt the most defeat that I have since arriving in Hanoi. It started off from a lack of sleep - both from not sleeping last weekend while in Kuala Lampur and then a long night of celebrations on my birthday - and ended in me just wanting to be in the English-speaking world again (or fluent in Vietnamese).

Occupation of Rocinha

Before going, I studied and presented a paper on the effects of top-down government structures on favelas in Brazil. While I was there, I saw the police raid and control several favelas in RJ. I was in the favela at work one...

How much does Canada give compared to the rest of the world and where does this money go? We’ve tracked the flow of global aid in three interactive maps. The first two deal with developmental aid to and from countries across the planet.

This past weekend Julian, Bart, and I went to Ninh Binh, a town about 2.5 hours away from Hanoi. The town is industrial and rather bleak however the areas surrounding Ninh Binh are absolutely beautiful.
While we were there, we saw three main sights:
(1) Tam Cốc
Tam Cốc is the main tourist destination in Ninh Binh. Hoards of tourist buses arrive solely at Tam Cốc just to see the beautiful...
