This is how we brought in the jewish new year. Family - please forgive my horrible blessing over the new year, I wrote it down wrong, couldn’t read my writing, and then couldn’t read with no light. My friends didn’t know it, but I can’t afford to be made fun of even more after Wednesday night’s events.  SHANA TOVA FROM VIETNAM! fromindevtovietnam: Bringing in the...

a big negative fantasy: 2 weeks in the field →
Couldn’t have put it any better.  thetiredknife: As INDEV students, we always get the comments that we are trying to “westernize” or “americanize” all countries in the world. That’s because people usually associate development to economic growth in the global market. They are obviously mistaken. INDEV is about making sure that everyone in…

A Whirlwind of Ngon*
Temporarily homeless (i.e. still living in the hotel) but always well fed - I think this is definitely the preferred way.  The last week has been a whirlwind of delicious eats, great friends, and overall great times. Hanoi is the type of place that makes me want to give up being an international development student and instead pursue a career as being a vegetarian food blogger in Vietnam.  ...

The night I fell in love with Hanoi...
Tonight, I went to the Hanoi Cinematheque with the group. It was something that one of our student tour guides turned friend, Hang, recommended. The Cinematheque is a joint non-profit between the Vietnam Book Company and Discovery Communication PTE of Singapore and is a beautiful cinema, that has local and international artists playing live music every Tuesday from 8:30 to 10:30.  The theatre is...

In one of my first posts, I wrote about the HIV/AIDS rates in Vietnam. The post simply writes that approximately 35 people per day are diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.  Now, I know my first post of Vietnam should be about my first two days in Vietnam, how amazing it is, how 12 of us ate for less than $50 today, and how the traffic - despite all previous rumours - really isn’t so bad to walk across,...

Horses Always Win
Since being in Indonesia, Melissa and I have come up with mini competitions – not about us – but instead about the things that surround us, like “airports vs. beds,” “meals vs. days,” “random Indonesians wanting pictures with us vs. number of beds we’ve slept in” (currently at an even tie of 6:6) and more recently, “horses vs. people” and “jeeps vs. horses.” And you know what? The horses always...
